National Asbestos Helpline and the Culture Crawl

05 September 2014

At National Asbestos Helpline we are always looking for ways to help those who find themselves in a difficult situation or others who are less fortunate, and earlier this year an event was brought to our attention that we knew straight away we had to get involved in! Maggie’s Culture Crawl is a 15 mile night time walk around London that explores some of the cultural highlights of the capital in order to raise money to help support cancer patients and their families.

National Asbestos Helpine’s very own Jan Garvey and Joan Kennedy will be taking part in the walk this year which will start on the evening of the 19th September. The route is constantly updated and this year is set to pass through Victoria Embankment Gardens, The Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Fulham Palace, Chelsea Physic Gardens as well as many more locations, while the walkers will also be treated to performances from musicians, dancers and artists along the way. As well as all of this, there will be the opportunity to taste some delicious food and drinks, which will no doubt be needed as the walk can take up to 10 hours to complete!

The Culture Crawl is designed to help raise money for Maggie’s Centres which are specialist centres located all over the UK where people who have been diagnosed with cancer, and their families, can go for free help, support and advice. The first centre was opened back in 1996 and the charity has since gone from strength to strength with a further 16 dedicated centres opening at major NHS cancer hospitals across the UK. The charity was founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks, a cancer patient who sadly lost her battle with breast cancer in 1995. She believed that people should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying” and set about creating a new approach to cancer care. Her legacy continues through the dedicated centres thanks to the work of her husband, Charles, and former oncology nurse Laura Lee who is now Maggie’s chief executive.

If you would like to donate money and support Jan and Joan (who will provide updates throughout the night via the National Asbestos Helpline twitter account) then please visit their Just Giving page or for further information on all of the great work that Maggie’s are involved in then you can visit their website here.
