‘Action Mesothelioma Day’ took place on Friday 4th July this year, a day which serves to raise awareness of the asbestos related disease and support those who have been affected by this terminal illness. This year, the National Asbestos Helpline recognised this very important occasion with an afternoon tea party at our offices in Chester.
Strawberry Morning Tea Party
Thanks to the (sort of) glorious weather, we were able to hold the party outside in a large marquis, with fresh scones, strawberries and cream available for the masses! Taking the time to serve scones as well as hot and cold drinks was a fantastic effort made by the team at the National Asbestos Helpline and we sincerely hope that we have been able to raise awareness of mesothelioma as well as fantastic proceeds. All of the funds that we gratefully received from thoughtful individuals in the public will be used to further fund the research and the treatment of this terrible condition.
What Is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer which affects the lining of the lungs and can occasionally affect the lining of the abdomen and heart. This is an illness which is commonly related to exposure to asbestos, which can be present in the home or in commercial properties. Unfortunately, the effects of inhaling asbestos dust may not present themselves for a long period of time, and can even remain dormant for up to 50 years. Common symptoms that are related to Mesothelioma can range from breathlessness to heavy sweating and the loss of appetite. Although Mesothelioma is a lesser known form of cancer, it has received some national airing in an ongoing storyline on Emmerdale. One of the characters, Donna, is diagnosed with this life threatening illness.
This storyline has an educational value, whereby it demonstrates the fact that young people are not immune to this disease. It is highly important to broadcast the dangers of inhaling asbestos fibres and raise awareness of Mesothelioma nationwide. Here at the National Asbestos Helpline, we are greatly aware of the affect that asbestos can have on an individual’s health and we appreciate the great distress that Mesothelioma can cause.
Our Strawberry Morning Tea Party was our recognition of ‘Action Mesothelioma Day’ and we hope to continue raising proceeds towards this incredible cause, with the help of the fantastic public.
