Types of Asbestos

Asbestos minerals can be classified into two groups, amphibole and serpentine, according to the physical make up of the fibres.

Amphibole asbestos contains long sharp fibres with a high length to width ratio.  This group includes:

  • Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
  • Amosite (brown asbestos).
  • By contrast serpentine asbestos has long curved fibres.
  • Chrysotile (white asbestos) is the only commercial form of serpentine asbestos.
