A new compensation scheme launched in April this year is offering compensation to those victims and their families who have suffered from diffuse mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. With compensation awards averaging at around £150,000 per claim, the scheme has paid out over £15 million since its launch seven months ago.

The Department for Work and Pensions believe there are still hundreds more people who are eligible to claim, with the department estimating that, by March 2015, the compensation pay out total could reach £32 million.

Scheme Designed Around Victims

The Department for Work and Pensions Minister, Lord Freud has encouraged victims and families to come forward and make a claim . He said that ‘victims of this terrible disease’ have been failed by the government as well as the insurance industry, with hundreds of people each year struggling to find appropriate representation.

This scheme offers compensation packages that will make the whole process easier. The packages include a sum of money that can be used to pay for legal feels, with all payments being made directly to the individuals. The scheme has also been designed so that victims are able to make direct applications, without the presence of a solicitor if they wish.

Important Information about the Scheme

This particular scheme is aimed at those who were diagnosed with diffuse mesothelioma after 25th July 2012. It’s also available to families of victims who have died as a result of the disease and anyone who is struggling to trace a liable employer or their insurers.

It’s important to remember that even if the insurance records cannot be traced, or the liable company has become insolvent, you’re still able to make a claim. Here at National Asbestos Helpline we can support you in your claim, offering unrivalled legal advice and using our database of insurers to help you find those liable.
